About this event

Saturday, May 16, Hike Lilly Bluff Point Trail Leave from the trailhead at 9 am. For those who want to carpool, we will leave from the Books-A-Million in Oak Ridge at 8 am. This hike is probably familiar to most; it's popular for good reasons. It's in the Obed Wild and Scenic River in Morgan County, a bit past Frozen Head SP and Wartburg. Parking is available for multiple cars, but since it's a popular spot for hikers and climbers, it can fill up quickly. I don't believe there is a trailhead restroom, so a stop in Wartburg on the way may be appropriate. The hike is just less than 4 miles total out and back, with a few rolling inclines and declines along the way, but nothing particularly steep. Just past the parking area is an overlook of the Clear Creek Gorge, which we will stop at. It's a great view and photo op. We continue hiking southward to the tip of the "Point," which is the confluence of Clear Creek and the Obed River. There is a cool arch near the Point, which has great views of the two gorges coming together. You will frequently see hawks high up in the air riding the thermal wind currents. Warning: There are steep drop-offs at the Point, so caution is advised. The Point is a great place for a rest, snack or lunch break. We then return to our cars, retracing our steps. If anyone wants to extend their hike, there is a nice level trail heading north from the parking lot which traverses a great bolder field above Clear Creek, used by beginning rock climbers honing their skills. There is also a trail descending to the Bridge over Clear Creek, offering great views of the cliffs and bluffs and frequently rock climbers scaling them, but be forewarned, if you go down, you have to return via a steep hike back up unless you arrange to have someone meet you at the bridge. Lastly, there is an option post hike for burgers and brews at the Lily Pad Hopyard Brewery just on the other side of Clear Creek. For questions, contact Randy Graham at 865-659-1289.
